No this isn’t some treatise by Jean-Paul Sartre. I was reading my morning dose of thought-leadership-tagged blog feeds and came across an article in Fast Company: Beyond Design, 10 Skills Designers Need to Succeed Now. I usually gloss over these because they’re inevitably formulaic and a little trite, but I stopped this morning because we have a new intern and I thought there may be a few good gold nuggets of wisdom there for her. In fact there were but that’s not why I’m writing. I was taken aback by this bullet:

Objectivity & Self Awareness: Assess yourself and your work, and view yourself through the eyes of others with a realistic understanding of your capabilities.

Seems simple enough but so many people I come across not only can’t do this for their own aesthetic visual design work, they can’t be objective with themselves in regard to their other non-design skills.

People have always remarked that I’m extremely critical about myself and my work – almost to the point that I’m unrealistic on the other end of the spectrum. But I think I have to be. There’s so much great design out there and so many challenges that would benefit form sound design thinking that by reminding myself there’s so much more ground to cover I keep hungry. I provide order to the gamut of bad-to-great design by placing myself in the spectrum and trying to understand what separates my work from better design. And it’s that honesty with myself I try to maintain since, for me, its undeniably linked to being objective and self-aware.

We considered it. If it weren’t for my employer allowing domestic partnerships to qualify for full health benefits, we’d have one to City Hall a few months ago.

(via the LAT):

On a broader scale, the survey found that healthcare costs outranked housing costs, rising food prices and credit card bills as a source of concern. Twenty-eight percent of those surveyed said they had experienced serious problems because of the cost of healthcare, compared with 29% who had problems getting a good job or a raise. Gasoline prices were the top economic worry, with 44% saying they had serious problems keeping up with increases at the pump.

The New York Times recently made the decision to hire controversial Neo-Con pundit and PNAC (Project for the New American Century) member, William Kristol. This decision is wrong on so many levels but none more more than this: Kristol has consistently disregarded the truth while using his megaphone at the Weekly Standard, FOX News, et. al. to advance not only wrong-headed ideas, but also to (wrongly) shape the framing of the terrorism debate in America.

When asked about the Liberal backlash about the Times’ decision, editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal had this to say:

The idea that The New York Times is giving voice to a guy who is a serious, respected conservative intellectual—and somehow that’s a bad thing… How intolerant is that?

It’s not about tolerance moron, it’s about the truth…

Here’s David Sirota’s response to crooksandliars via email:

This is really sick – especially when you consider it is happening at a time when the country is clearly moving more progressive, and there are so many good progressive columnists who have guest columned for the Times before (Ehrenreich, Katha Pollit, Tom Frank, etc.).

Either way – it is an absolute abomination from the standpoint of basic accountability. A pundit being factually wrong on almost everything he hung his hat on is rewarded by the largest newspaper in the world for his track record. If ever there was an example of the world of journalism literally thumbing its nose at basic accountability, this example of Bill Kristol falling up is it.
